Bio:

If the mark of a good actor is the ability to pull off comedy, then Nathan Fillion is certainly right up there at the top. In addition to his seemingly natural talent for comedy, actor Nathan Fillion has proven himself more than capable, playing a variety of roles that draw on drama, suspense and romance.

Fillion started on the path to a teaching career (following in the footsteps of his mother Cookie and his father Bob and elder brother Jeff who he considers to be heroes in his life) by studying at the University of Alberta however just months short of graduating he could not pass up the opportunity to take up a role in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. He proved very popular as the show’s character Joey Buchanan and was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award, as well as a Soap Opera Digest Award, for “Outstanding Young Actor” in 1996.

After three years in the role, on the advice of a mentor, Fillion moved to Los Angeles to pursue further career opportunities. The move proved fruitful and gained him roles in the films “Saving Private Ryan” (as the “other” Private Ryan), “Blast From the Past”, and “Dracula 2000″.

A recurring guest role on “Two Guys and a Girl” as the lovable Johnny Donnelly was so popular the character become a full time role. When Two Guys and a Girl ended, Fox gave Fillion a talent holding deal which lead to the leading role in “Firefly” in 2003.

While “Firefly” was short lived (seeing only 11 episodes aired), it quickly became a cult hit and fan response was so strong the series was released on DVD with an additional 3 episodes that were never aired on TV. Following this, in 2005 the movie “Serenity”, based on the “Firefly” series, was released by Universal. The movie was a big hit among fans and critics and continues to gain more fans as new viewers are introduced to the “Firefly” ‘verse.

Following Firefly’s cancellation, Fillion played a villain (Caleb) in the final five episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in 2003.

Fillion received critical praise for his roles in two independent Canadian films, “Water’s Edge” (2003) and “Outing Riley” (2004). Playing grieving novelist Robert Graves in Water’s Edge, he demonstrated his flair for subtle realism. As family jokester Luke Riley in Outing Riley, his ability to combine comedy with sensitive dramatic material was beautifully revealed.

“Serenity” (2005) was followed up by the leading role in the quirky horror film, “Slither” (2006), which won him glowing reviews across the board for his understated performance as the hapless, frustrated hero, Police Chief Bill Pardy. Fillion displayed his rare gift for grounding the dramatic moments as the straight man while constantly delivering laughs through his character’s befuddled reactions to the bizarre happenings around him.

Playing the lead role of Abe in the supernatural suspense thriller “White Noise: The Light”, Fillion once again received abundant reviews that reflect on his ability to play a wide variety of roles and to make you feel for his character. “White Noise: The Light” was released in UK cinemas in January 2005 and released to DVD as “White Noise 2″ in the USA in Jan 2008.

After signing a talent holding deal with Fox late in 2006, Fillion secured the lead role in a new TV series, “Drive”, which aired 4 episodes in April and a further two in July 2007.

Having gained experience playing a gynocologist in the Independent film “Waitress” (2007) in which he co-stared with Keri Russell, Fillion reprised the role of an Ob-Gyn as a recurring guest character in the award winning ABC drama “Desperate Housewives” during 2007-2008.

2008 has been a busy year for Fillion who played lead actress Michelle Monhagan’s best friend and neighbour “Runner” in the independent movie “Trucker” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008 and filmed the movie “Chilled in Miami” with Renée Zellweger which is expected to be released early in 2009.

Also in 2008, Fillioni plays Captain Hammer in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” written by Joss Whedon, his brothers Jed & Zack Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Dr Horrible also stars Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day and was released online in July 2008 and will be released on DVD soon.

Currently Fillion is working on an ABC drama called “Castle” in which he plays the lead character, a mystery/horror novelist who is called on by the NYPD to help solve crimes after a copy-cat murderer commits crimes based on scenes from his novels.

Amongst his cast mates, crew members, fans and even the press, Fillion is known to be one of Hollywood’s nicest actors and Fillion is currently working with London artist Martin Firrell on a public art project called “Hero - the future of gods, icons and heroes”. The art project - aimed at providing men with new ideas about serving their communities without the use of force - is set to open in London some time in 2009.
