Q: What is the film about from your perspective?
A: “it is a great film about people looking for fulfillment in life. Even though it deals with pregnancy and motherhood, I don’t see this as a women’s movie. I don’t see this as being about motherhood either or about being pregnant. It is about people trying to be happy. It is the same thing that we are all doing in our everyday lives, just trying to make choices. It looks at what kind of choices people make and whether we make easy choices or more challenging ones, that might be more rewarding in the long term.”

Q: Can you talk about who this guy is, on the face of it, it is outrageous what he does, having an affair with his pregnant patient, how did you perceive him?
A: “He’s hardly a dog, he is not a bad guy at all. We have two people here and they are both being unfaithful to their partners, yet we forgive them. We forgive Jenna very easily, because she’s obviously in an abusive relationship, although it is harder to forgive my character, it is true. From what we see of Dr Pommater’s relationship, his wife is beautiful, she’s a doctor, she’s affectionate, they seem affectionate together too. But we all know couples like that don’t we? You can never really tell what is going on behind closed doors. Couples may seem really happy on the surface, then we find out: Oh my god they’re getting a divorce and we cannot understand why because they seem so perfect, so what could possibly be the problem, what went wrong, we wonder? But really, who are we to say how hearts communicate and what might either draw people together or pull them apart. It is all about people who are obviously searching for something to fill a void within themselves and make choices to try to be happy. These two people came together because they see a chance of happiness and love. “

Q: What was the appeal of this film for you?
A: “Well first of all I thought it was a very pretty little story, I thought it was a very cute little slice of life tale. I had no idea how emotional it might be when I started the project; I didn’t have the vision that Adrienne obviously had about what these characters have to say. In some ways, the story seems to be larger than life, yet it is really just a simple, tiny little story. I love it because it speaks to me so clearly I think about my own daily choices every day in terms of how to find happiness.”

There’s a sharp edge that makes this film much more than a female-empowerment comedy. The late writer-direct-actor Shelly astutely examines mother-daughter issues, keeping us laughing before delivering her emotional gut-punch of a finale….Each character is written and performed with a wonderful depth of wit and resonance; these are recognisably real people who are also hysterically funny on screen. Russell gives Jenna a remarkable balance of hopefulness and resolve; this is a woman who has accepted the fact that she is trapped in a miserable life, even as she keeps trying to find a way out….This pretty much defines all of the characters in the film, so when they interact with each other in various ways, the sparks are vivid and thoroughly engaging. The chemistry between the actors is fantastic, most notably for Russell and Fillion, who come together with an amusing awkwardness that’s actually very sweet. And there’s a terrific sense of camaraderie between the strong-willed Russell, the feisty Hines (with echoes of Alice’s Flo) and the loveably nerdy Shelly….the film is packed with provocative, challenging twists and turns that give the humour a solid foundation.

The Kids Need to Read project, led by sci-fi author PJ Haarsma and supported by actor Nathan Fillion and many volunteers has been officially launched.

One of the goals of this charitable program is to encourage active literacy in reluctant young readers. It is difficult for books to compete against the constant bombardment of advertising for television, movies, video games and other electronics aimed at children. Add to that a young person who finds reading difficult and there is little incentive for them to pick up a book. Mr. Haarsma’s imaginative and fast-paced book, The Softwire: Virus on Orbis 1, has proven to be immensely appealing to children who have lost interest in books. It will be the first book Kids Need to Read donates to libraries in need. The commitment of Kids Need to Read is to expand the project to include other books, authors and celebrities so that more children will be exposed to the enrichment that reading can bring to their lives. The names of libraries that would benefit from book donations can be submitted at the Kids Need to Read website.

To raise funds, this program sells special packages, the total profits of which are used to buy books for needy schools and libraries. The package prices start as low as $5 and range up to $95. Of special interest to Nathan Fillion fans is a spectacular fan package filled with an amazing array of items. Among the many items included are copies of The Softwire: Virus on Orbis 1, signed by both PJ and Nathan; autographed limited edition collector’s cards and a CD featuring Nathan’s awesome audio recording of the first three chapters of The Softwire. But there’s even more than that - you can find out what goodies are available at the Kids Need to Read website www.kidsneedtoread.org.

Waitress registered the second-highest US box-office takings per screen on its opening weekend, second only to Spider-Man 3. The film is due for wider release in Australia on October 4.

…Shelly has crafted a story of growing self-awareness and hope. Without this dark background, the movie would have been saccharine enough to send you into diabetic shock. Without the levity and some of the indie film quirkiness, it would have been too depressing to be deemed “entertainment.” As it stands, Waitress strikes a wonderful balance of bitter and sweet, of darkness and light. It earns its tears by the end, even without the knowledge of the unsavory murder of the director, Ms. Shelly, late last year.

You can achieve your dreams. You can be happy or at least be happy enough. You have to stand up for yourself.

Having an affair is wrong. It can hurt others.

It is okay for a mother not to be thrilled to be carrying a baby. She may end up loving the baby to pieces after it is born.

Even though some elderly are grumpy, they may still be wonderful and wise people. If you can just get past the grumpy part.

Don’t underestimate the power of an unconditional hug–even a 30-second one. Ordinary touching is very important. But a 20-minute unconditional hug–that could save many marriages.

Appreciate what your loved ones are good at or what their passions are. Enjoy it. Tell them you appreciate it. Help them pursue their dreams. Unless, of course, illegal or immoral. At the very least, don’t cut it down. Unless, of course, illegal or immoral.

Be there for them. It is good to give someone a gift without expecting anything in return.

In “Waitress” (May 2) Nathan Fillion plays the funny-Valentine love object of Keri Russell’s pie-baking genius, and does it so deftly you wonder why more directors of romantic comedy haven’t snapped him up. The last film by Adrienne Shelly, who was murdered in her Greenwich Village office last November, “Waitress” spices its humor with some decidedly tangy elements. For one thing the romance between Ms. Russell and Mr. Fillion is highly inappropriate, yet he carries it off with a light touch, quirky enough to feel just right.

A married ob-gyn who sleeps with an unhappy patient? Yikes. What’s funny about that? Mr. Fillion is, not least because he’s so good at looking blindsided by Jenna’s beauty and charm. When she suddenly leaps into his arms, he catches her with the stunned look of a man who can’t believe his luck. But that’s all he does.

No face-pulling or exaggerated double takes. Mr. Fillion is funny precisely because he’s a minimalist. His double takes are so tiny they’re a joke in themselves. His quiet just-folks presence on screen is a magnet; you watch to see what he’s up to.

Among the things Mr. Fillion lets us see before the movie ends is the subtle fault line — selfishness — in this sweet and caring man. It’s not a lot of selfishness, just a little. Kind of like sneaking a second piece of pie. – Karen Durbin
